Top 25 Lawnmower Beers

Fancy Lawnmower Beer Saint Arnold

10. Fielder’s Choice
Heavy Seas Beer

“Take me out to the ballgame! Take me out with the crowd! Buy me some beer cans full of cold beer…” Sorry, is that not how it goes? This crisp, easy-drinking American Lager is decorated with an image of Cal Ripken Jr., one of the greatest players ever for the Baltimore Orioles, to commemorate his incredible consecutive games streak. Baltimore-based Heavy Seas created a crushable lager that’s fit to be glugged while baseballs are slugged.

9. Pivo
Firestone Walker Brewing Company

A super-smooth Pilsner from the masters of barrel-aging, Firestone Walker’s Pivo (the Czech word for beer) provides a prototypical Czech Pilsener drinking experience without trekking all the way to Prague. Spicy hops, light bready malt and an extremely clean fermentation character make this an excellent choice for the sunny summer days ahead.

8. Reissdorf Kölsch
Privatbrauerei Heinrich Reissdorf

This ale from the OG Kölsch-makers at Reissdorf is matured like a lager for its crisp drinkability without sacrificing the estery goodness of the style. The delicate interplay between its myriad components make this a brew to savor, though it's thirst-quenchingly chuggable.

7. True Blonde Ale
Ska Brewing

As a mascara'd eye gazes out at you from the can, you won't feel bad about stopping the mower to enjoy this Blonde Ale's clean fermentation, smooth mouthfeel and ample compexity.

6. Mama's Little Yella Pils
Oskar Blues Brewery

The first brewery to house its beers exclusively in cans knew that an easy-drinking Pilsner had to be a part of its year-round lineup. Coupled with a terrific name and a bright yellow can color, you have the makings of a tremendous lawnmower beer. Just be safe and don’t mix actual little yellow pills with Oskar Blues’ Little Yella Pils.

5. Laimas Kölsch Style Ale
FATE Brewing Company

This astounding Kölsch was recently reviewed in our inaugural Travel Issue, and our judge was blown away by the soft, bready malt character, the traces of fruity pear aromas and the mild but lingering bitterness from the spicy and herbaceous hops. Eminently quaffable, this Boulder, Colorado-based Kölsch has all the makings of a go-to summer beer.

4. Devils Backbone Vienna Lager
Devils Backbone Brewing Company

Devils Backbone’s Vienna Lager may well have been a deciding factor in their recent purchase by AB InBev – demonstrating their ability to brew an easy-drinking, complex style. DB’s Vienna Lager is uniformly described as clean and light, while providing a wonderful palette for intricate, delicately malty aspects of its multi-tiered mash to shine. If you’re sweating over all the acquisitions, acquiring one of these may help to take the edge off.

3. Gold Lager
Stoudt’s Brewing Company

Stoudt's has carved out a piece of heaven with its helles, which elegantly balances Hallertau and Saaz spiciness with cookie-like malt, while interspersing hints of nutmeg and floral hops, for an assertive yet not overpowering drinking experience.

2. Sünner Kölsch
Sünner Brauerei

The first beer ever bestowed with the Kölsch moniker remains the gold standard for the style. Subtle, smooth and intoxicating (though not because of a high ABV, which sits at a manageable 5.2%), this beer is a showcase for refined noble hops, fruity and flowery aromas and mild hints of mouthwatering honey. Truly, a world-class lawnmower beer that would make even the most dedicated yardworker forget his task for a moment and focus only on his beverage. Best enjoyed from a traditional stange glass.

1. Prima Pils
Victory Brewing Company

It’s one of The Beer Connoisseur’s highest-rated beers of all time (perhaps we should leave it at that). You won’t see “extreme” and “pilsner” used to describe the same thing very often, but Victory’s Prima manages to push every facet of flavor contrast to the edge, while remaining gracefully poised on the stylistic tightrope of a pilsner. The result is an uber-light and refreshing ale bursting with flavor, which our judges described as “perfectly suited for anything, anytime, anywhere.”
