Night Nurse by Fogtown Brewing Co. is an American Stout and is being evaluated as an American Stout (category 20B in the 2015 BJCP Beer Style Guidelines). American Stouts are mid-range gravity with roasted and chocolate malt flavors like the rest of the stout family. American Stouts are most noted for a more aggressive hop aroma, flavor and bitterness compared to the rest of the styles in the stout family.

Night Nurse pours black in color with a strong opacity and a huge dark brown head. The aroma is of strong roasted and coffee malt characters with lighter notes of chocolate and burnt malts; moderate, light resiny hops provide a contrast to the dark malt aromas. The flavor is of moderate chocolate and roasted malts with lighter notes of burnt, coffee and caramel malts over a hint of resiny hops. The beer finishes moderately bitter and fairly dry with lingering flavors of moderate roasted and coffee malts over a light resiny hoppiness.

Night Nurse is a solid stout. At 7.1% ABV, this beer brings rich flavors yet maintains quaffability – well done! Perhaps a little more aggressive hopping would make this a better fit this style. Regardless, stout lovers are going to be very happy with this dark, roasty beer.
