Wild Leap Brew Co. Chief Brewing Officer Chris Elliott Talks Alpha Abstraction, Vol. 14

We spoke with Wild Leap Brew Co. Chief Brewing Officer Chris Elliott about Alpha Abstraction, Vol. 14.

BC: Is this your “desert island beer?”
Absolutely. This is a beer that I drink almost every day.

BC: Can you describe this beer in 10 words or less?
Pure, sweet, delicious pink grapefruit.

BC: Do you know a story – or have a personal story – that revolves around this beer?
This beer features a hop that I have been hunting for a while. I read an article about this experimental variety that had unbelievable pink grapefruit characteristics and was an absolute favorite amongst hop growers. It was HBC 692. I couldn't find enough of the hop to do a large release, so I put this recipe on hold. Then out of the blue I saw a press release that the hop would be named "Talus" and was available. I ordered immediately and finally got my hands on enough to do a large release!

BC: What's a good food pairing for this beer?
This beer pairs very nicely with sweet smoky barbecue meats.

Wild Leap Brew Co. Chief Brewing Officer Chris Elliott Talks Alpha Abstraction, Vol. 13

We spoke with Wild Leap Brew Co. Chief Brewing Officer Chris Elliott about Alpha Abstraction, Vol. 13.

BC: Who came up with this beer’s recipe?
This is a recipe that I developed as our double IPAs began to evolve to become juicier and hazier.

BC: What’s your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, etc.)?
The aroma. We used Sabro Cryo to get an unbelievable coconut and tangerine profile. It is one of the most unique hops I have ever worked with.

BC: Where does this beer’s name come from?
Our CEO Anthony Rodriguez named this one. We wanted the series to feature a rotating hop, and we wanted to build a base beer that helps give an "abstract" of the hop profile. That morphed into Alpha Abstraction and boom, the name was born.

BC: Can you describe this beer in 10 words or less?
Juice!

Wallenpaupack Brewing Co. Head Brewer Logan Ackerley Talks Big DIPA

We spoke with Wallenpaupack Brewing Co. Head Brewer Logan Ackerley about Big DIPA.

BC: What’s your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, etc.)?
My favorite thing about Big DIPA is the amount of fruity hop character it has. We keep the bitterness low to really amplify the tropical fruit notes derived from the hops.

BC: Where does this beer’s name come from?
It’s just a play on us wanting to brew a big double IPA with a fun label concept.

BC: Can you describe this beer in 10 words or less?
Hazy tropical fruit hop bomb.

BC: Do you know a story – or have a personal story – that revolves around this beer?
One of the fun things about this beer is the label we put on it. Galaxy and Vic Secret hops are the stars in this double IPA so we had the label artist throw in some subtle references to them. The galaxy in the sky behind the moon (obviously) references Galaxy hops and the women’s clothing by the dock is a subtle nod to Victoria's Secret.

Breckenridge Brewery Introduces Juice Drop Hazy IPA

Breckenridge Brewery in Littleton, Colorado has announced the release of a new hazy IPA brewed with an experimental hop (HBC 472) that features a soft, pillowy mouthfeel due to its haziness. Details on the beer are below.

Soft, lush and intensely juicy, our hazy IPA is bursting with hoppy aroma and flavor. To intensify the tropical hop layers without adding to the hop bitterness we dropped in an experimental hop known as HBC 472. This exciting new variety - resulting from open pollination of a wild American hop - is responsible for a distinct coconut-like characteristic. HBC 472 combined with Mosaic, Amarillo and Idaho 7 lends a pleasant and unique complexity loaded with bold flavors of citrus & coconut balanced by a soft mouthfeel.
