Deepfake Non-Alcoholic IPA by Flying Dog Brewery is a difficult one to review, so I'm evaluating it as a 21B Specialty IPA with a non-alcoholic aspect. On the nose, it's initially juicy and orange juice-heavy, with grapefruit lingering. Beyond this, however, I'm getting a buttery/butterscotch note that grows to dominate somewhat. It's charming in the distinctly citrus slant but the butter is pretty distracting. It also has the appearance of a headless hazy IPA, somewhat fizzy. Deep yellow gold color. At tasting, it's NA nature belies it. It's interesting in that the butterscotch qualities, coupled with the malt and bitterness, do give the beer adjacent feel to this, but it's lacking in depth of hop flavor and yeast complexity here. Again, I'm not 100% certain this is a diacetyl bomb, but it sure is butterscotchy. Again, difficult to really evaluate, because, apples to apples with it's alcoholic counterparts, this doesn't stand a chance. As an option for someone that is alcohol-compromised, I could see this being something worth exploring. It just is a bit one-dimensional and lacks complexity and mouthfeel sadly.
