Homestyle by Bearded Iris Brewing is being judged as an American IPA (Category 21A) per the 2015 BJCP style guidelines.
This beer pours a gold color with opaque haze adding a milky note to the appearance of this beer. White foam of medium bubbles adds a lacing to the beer as the beer is consumed. The aroma consists of medium-low dank notes, which are followed by medium-low citrus orange notes. Hops take center stage here though a slight wheat/oat note lingers in the background behind the hops. Despite its thinner flavor, this beer has a medium body with medium carbonation. There is no alcohol warmth or astringency though the creaminess noted in the flavor also translates into creaminess in the mouthfeel. The overall flavor intensity of this beer is medium, and has a slightly “watery” quality to it though it still packs a lovely flavor profile. Medium flavors of pine and bitter orange are accentuated by a low rose-like note summarizing the hop flavor of this beer. As the beer warms, tropical flavors of pineapple and papaya begin to manifest in the flavor as well. Medium (almost bordering medium-high) bitterness with a slight hop spice finalize the hop character of this beer. There is a low wheat/oat flavor, which adds a distinct creaminess to the flavor. This beer balances towards the bitter with a lingering dank, bitter orange and spice in the finish. Despite its thinner flavor, this beer has a medium body with medium carbonation. There is no alcohol warmth or astringency though the creaminess noted in the flavor also translates into creaminess in the mouthfeel. Overall, this is an interesting IPA that is quite drinkable, though it slightly lacks the hop character intensity of more traditional American IPAs. Despite this, it's sessionable and a flavorful beer, and it is one of the more refreshing IPAs that does not sell out hop nuance to attain this.
