pFriem Coconut Stout by pFriem Family Brewers is a stout brewed with toasted coconut and is being evaluated as a Spice, Herb or Vegetable Beer (category 30A from the 2015 BJCP Beer Style Guidelines). Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beers should have a harmonious balance between the spices, herbs, or vegetables with the base beer style. American Stouts are mid-range gravity and alcohol content stouts with roasted and chocolate malt flavors like the rest of the stout family.

Coconut Stout pours pitch black, is opaque, and sports a medium tan-colored head. The aroma is of moderate roasted and chocolate malts with a lighter, complementing coconut. The flavor adds coffee and a light sweetness to the moderate roasted and chocolate malts; a light toasted coconut complements the dark malts. The body is medium (almost medium-full) with a creamy, smooth mouthfeel. The finish is moderately bitter with rich dark malts of roasted chocolate and coffee with a hint of toasted coconut.

This is a very solid stout with rich and complex dark malt flavors. The coconut is at a high enough level to add a complement to the dark malts but not so high that it takes over the flavor profile. Buy this stout for being an excellent stout; enjoy the toasted coconut as a background flavor.
