Dan Preston

Dan Preston's picture
Beer Judge

Dan discovered craft beer his junior year of college and never looked back. After a few years of brewery tours and tastings, he finally dove into homebrewing in 2009 when a work colleague was giving up the hobby. Shortly after, he joined one of the oldest club’s in the nation (Boston Wort Processors) and quickly got into judging beer and was a National-ranked BJCP judge by 2013. As an officer of the Worts since 2011, Dan has assisted in organizing several AHA/BJCP competitions as well as trying to promote beer education and experimentation. While he appreciates and makes all beer styles, Dan’s favorites are of the hoppy or sour variety, and has even had great luck combining the two.

Similar to the original King of Hop, but the grapefruit zest brings it to a higher level. The hops and grapefruit blend well together and enhance the underlying character. The grapefruit is stronger than the hops, yet the character could be mistaken for tropical flavor-leaning hops. The flavor... Read More

Patroon IPA by Hidden Cove Brewing is an American IPA and is being reviewed as such (BJCP 2015 Category 21A). It pours a deep golden color with an orange hue from some haze and a lasting off-white head. The aroma is all about the hops with a soft fruit character (orange, melon) as well as some... Read More

Gathered #1 by Wunderkammer Bier is a sour ale with coltsfoot, bramble leaf, goldenrod, and chanterelle mushrooms, which puts it under BJCP 2015 category 28C Wild Specialty Beer due to its use of herbs/spices. I had to look up what most of these additions were and upon tasting this beer, I have... Read More

Adoptable Lager by Motorworks Brewing is a golden lager that would best fit under BJCP category 2A, International Pale Lager.

The beer pours a deep yellow color, but not quite golden in color, with a bright white head that unfortunately doesn’t carry great retention fading to a thin rim... Read More

Cookie Season Stout by Wild Leap Brew Co. is an Imperial Stout (BJCP category 20C), however, due to the addition of coconut it shifts to Spice, Herb & Vegetable Beer (BJCP Category 30A). This beer pours a very deep brown, not quite black in appearance. It has a... Read More

You have to love this time of year. The nights start to get cooler, the leaves begin to change, and, most importantly, Oktoberfests begin coming out of the woodwork. Unfortunately, this easy-drinker could use a bit more work towards style. It pours a light amber, reminiscent of orange blossom... Read More
