Beer Judge

Dan discovered craft beer his junior year of college and never looked back. After a few years of brewery tours and tastings, he finally dove into homebrewing in 2009 when a work colleague was giving up the hobby. Shortly after, he joined one of the oldest club’s in the nation (Boston Wort Processors) and quickly got into judging beer and was a National-ranked BJCP judge by 2013. As an officer of the Worts since 2011, Dan has assisted in organizing several AHA/BJCP competitions as well as trying to promote beer education and experimentation. While he appreciates and makes all beer styles, Dan’s favorites are of the hoppy or sour variety, and has even had great luck combining the two.

Kawi by Currahee Brewing Co. is a Coffee Milk Stout and will be judged as a Spice Herb & Vegetable Beer under BJCP 2015 category 30A due to the coffee, with a base style of sweet stout (16A). The inherent difficulty in this style is providing an additive that not only complements the base... Read More

This Double IPA pours a clear golden color with an impressive white head. The nose is hop-forward mixed with a little bit of sweetness. The hop character is complex with notes of citrus, orange, grapefruit peel, mango and a little bit of resinous pine. Beneath the hops is a light caramel... Read More

Sparkly Princess by Holy City Brewing is a sour IPA which doesn’t really have a true home in the BJCP 2015 guidelines. The closest fit is probably 28B Mixed Fermentation Sour Beer. Despite the lack of a home, it has become an increasingly popular style that is popping up all over the place. It’s... Read More

Madam Basil by Holy City Brewing is a Saison, but due to the addition of basil will be judged as a Spice, Herb, Vegetable Beer under BJCP 2015 category 30A with a base of Saison (category 25B). The difficulty in this SHV style is layering the SHV element such that it complements the style while... Read More

This beer pours a lightly hazy deep golden color with orange hues and a long-lasting white head. At first, this beer conveys a moderately hoppy aroma, mostly with notes of grapefruit and orange zest as well as some herbal grassiness. As it warms, some more tropical notes and resin begin to show... Read More

This Saison pours a deep straw color with brilliant clarity and a large white head. Spicy notes are noticeable the second the beer hits the glass and the nose is all the about the spice. A blend of freshly ground peppercorns is discovered up front as well as some clove, ginger, cardamom and... Read More
