Beer Judge

Rodney Tillinghast has been pursuing the perfect pint after his first sip of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale in a Buffalo tavern in 1988.  Since then, he expanded his beer horizons at every opportunity, including homebrewing for the past 25 years, being a BJCP beer judge for 21 years, working commercially as a brewer at Brown’s Brewing Company for a spell, and tasting beer throughout his travels all across the US and abroad.  He attained the BJCP rank of National Judge early in 2015.

Rodney presently lives in North Carolina with his “beer widow” wife and two fine sons.

Today’s beer pours forth a medium straw color with a white puffy head that dangled in the glass throughout sampling. Lazy floral and malt notes were detected in the aroma, backed up by a light grassiness. It punched through on the tasting side with a light, restrained bitterness level, supported... Read More

“Refreshingly traditional..." This mythical advertising tagline kept spooling in my brain as I sipped this finely crafted pilsner.

On the traditional side, it features a continental-based malt experience, gloriously bready and crackery throughout the nose and taste. Additionally, the hops... Read More

Judged by the alcohol content as a British Strong Ale (Style 17A), it settled in as a tawny brown ale with an off-beige head, with some lacing and legs.  Aromas noted included intense toffee, dark fruit, and roasted apples.  In the background, there also was a subtle earthy hop aroma, but also... Coastal Harmony by Urban South Brewery was judged as a Double IPA (BJCP Style 22A).

This beer poured out a murky hazy orange, with a thick pungent off-white head that rode high the entire tasting session. Immediate aromatic notes of pine, lemon zest and vanilla jumped out as it sat near... Read More

A key to an impressive Double IPA is providing the requisite hop-centric experience to the drinker, all while maintaining a desirable level of drinkability. The sample in front of me definitely pushed beyond the boundaries of drinkability, which unfortunately makes me view this beer as more of... Read More

This earthy, complex ale poured a muddled, tawny pink in my goblet, with a pretty, light pink head and carbonation bubbles rocketing from the bottom of my glass at a frenetic rate. In the aroma, there were mature, aged raspberry notes combined with the traditional “horse sweat” of a... Read More
