Description
At Tröegs, we dove deeper into the artisanal meets mechanical hop state of IPA. Born out of our small-batch Scratch Series, Double Perpetual explores our love of big, bold West Coast-style ales. Cycling through copious amounts of Cascade, Chinook and Citra hops, this Double Imperial Pale Ale emerges with even stickier notes of citrus, pine and tropical fruit.

Double Perpetual IPA by Tröegs Independent Brewing is being evaluated as Style 22A, Double IPA, per the 2021 BJCP Style Guidelines.
Right off the bat, this beer pours like an old-school DIPA, which is mostly clear with the faintest of hop hazes, a deep gold color and a creamy white head. Pretty classic look, really. The nose pops with C-hops that are piney and resiny with a hint of mango to mix it up. Grapefruit galore in this. Behind that is a hint of caramel and sweet malt. Again, pretty old school. It doesn’t smell particularly sweet, but rather more malty with a hint of caramel.
On tasting,it’s surprisingly balanced. Not the palate wrecker of bitterness I was expecting, though it’s definitely bitter and clean. Again, driven by citrus and grapefruit. Sturdy malt backbone props it up with graham cracker and toast. Super drinkable at 9.5% ABV is impressive. I don’t get any of that over-extracted alcohol character at all, just classic West Coast DIPA elements. Super clean and fresh with a great amount of body. Maybe just a touch too full-bodied for my liking, but that’s probably checking the alcohol. Great stuff!
