Loon Call by Batson River Brewing & Distilling is a pilsner and is being evaluated as a German Pils (category 5D in the 2021 BJCP Beer Style Guidelines). German Pils are noted for their light color, high attenuation, clean lager fermentation, German hops and a dry, crisp finish.
Loon Call pours golden in color with excellent clarity and a small white head. The aroma is light pils malt with a hint of toasted malt; light herbal hops contrast the malt. The flavor is moderately light pils malt with a lighter bready malt note and light herbal hops. The beer finishes moderately bitter with moderately light grainy pils and light herbal hops.
Loon Call is a very good pilsner with a crisp, clean finish. The beer has a surprising depth of malt flavor for a style that one would typically a light, simple malt flavor for. While a little graininess in that blend of malts detracts a bit, this is still an enjoyable Pils.
