When the nights are long and temperatures get nippy, it's always a pleasure to look forward to a Winter Seasonal Ale (Style 30C) to sip at. Snow Bird by Low Road Brewing poured a dark amber with mysterious tawny highlights. While the head got a roaring start, it waned in the snifter to settle into a pensive side attraction to the flavors beneath.
Aroma notes jumping out included a substantial milk chocolate component with some marshmallow underneath, reminding one of campfire s’mores. One could also get some dried figs and raisins as the sample warmed a bit.
The flavorings mirrored the aromas, as the chocolate component was substantial, but there were some interesting molasses and fruitcake notes as well. While the alcohol was not prevalent, there were some inklings as I neared the bottom of the glass. Overall, this was drinkable with just enough bitterness to keep it from being cloying, but still had a fairly heavy mouthfeel with the chocolaty finish lingering. While a true treat for anyone that enjoys a hefty cocoa-impacted beer, I found it wanting for other flavors to make it more interesting for the long run.
