Fancy Pants by Urban South Brewery was judged as a Spice, Herb or Vegetable Beer (BJCP sub-style 30A).
It poured dark mahogany and opaque into the glass, producing a thick white head with robust retention. The aroma featured intense chocolate and dark malt notes initially and throughout, but no base malt, hop or alcohol ones, largely consistent with its imperial stout base style.
The flavor profile began with light hop and malt notes up front, and the cacao nibs and dark malts continued to be major flavor and bittering contributors. The mouthfeel consisted of a full body, moderate creaminess, high carbonation, alcohol warmth to style, a pleasant chocolate cake-like palate coating and some lasting sweetness in the finish.
The overall impression is of a well-brewed beer intended for drinking as or with a dessert course, or as an after-dinner drink. It is an exceptional rendition of its specialty style.
