Widmer’s Legendary KGB Russian Imperial Stout Makes a Limited Return to Portland

Widmer Brothers rounds out its 40 Years of Cheers celebration with a release that veteran fans have been clamoring for. The re-introduction of KGB Russian Imperial Stout brings one of the brewery’s richest and rarest beers back to Portland, providing a unique opportunity to sample a cult classic that helped to define Widmer’s more experimental side. To a lot of drinkers, it’s the chance to drink a beer that lives more in legend than in bottle.

According to a press release from Widmer Brothers, KGB Russian Imperial Stout is available exclusively on draft at select Portland-area bars, pubs and eateries for a limited time.

First poured at the Widmer Brothers Pub in 1998, KGB is a dark, decadent Russian Imperial Stout created by longtime Widmer brewer Ben Dobler. The beer quickly earned cult status among pub regulars, eventually making its way into bottles as part of the W-Series in 2011 before becoming a rare and occasional draught-only sighting. Now, for a limited time, KGB returns to Portland taps where it first made its name.

At 9.3% ABV and 65 IBUs, KGB is an extremely rich and complex stout with tremendous body and mouthfeel. Layers of roasty malt character deliver bold chocolate and coffee aromas, while spicy hop notes and significant hopping help balance the beer’s formidable malt backbone. Brewed with Pale, Roast, C-60L, Chocolate and Midnight Wheat malts—and hopped with Alchemy, Zeus, Cascade and Willamette—KGB pours deep, opaque black with a thick brown foam and a warming finish that hides its strength remarkably well.

KGB Russian Imperial Stout marks the final chapter of Widmer’s 40 Years of Cheers campaign, which celebrates four iconic beers—one from each decade of Widmer Brothers’ history—that helped shape Portland’s craft beer scene.
