The Fulkin Scottish Ale by Half Batch Brewing was reviewed as a Scottish Export, Category 14A, according to the 2021 BJCP Style Guidelines.
The beer was poured from a 12-ounce bottle into a pint glass and immediately revealed a very pleasant toasted biscuit aroma, with toffee notes adding distinct complexity.
It was strikingly good-looking in appearance, brilliant in clarity, with a medium tan head and a mahogany hue.
The flavor profile reflected caramelized malt notes enhanced by toffee and brown sugar. These elements melded well together and added complexity to the malty character that defines the style.
It was medium- to full-bodied and smooth, with lower levels of carbonation as appropriate for the style. The alcohol worked well with the base ingredients and did not overwhelm.
Overall, this was a well-conceived Scottish ale that delivered a wealth of malty flavor while avoiding the blandness often associated with the style.
