Passion Post Parade Sour by Black-Type Brewing was evaluated as a Wild Specialty Beer, Style 28C, per the 2021 BJCP Style Guidelines.
The almost clear gold beer pours with a medium-large head of large bubbles that quickly dissipates. There is a big fruity tropical nose of guava and passion fruit with just a hint of bready wheat. There is also a slight musty, earthy Brettanomyces aroma and hints of pineapple.
Pineapple, passion fruit, and particularly guava lead off the very fruity tropical flavor, with Mandarin orange joining in mid-palate. A light, fresh-baked bready wheat character supports the prominent fruit, while a slight Brett funk adds complexity. Bitterness is very low, and there is a moderate, clean lactic sourness that helps offset the big fruit notes that give an impression of sweetness.
The smooth tropical fruit notes linger into a long finish, with a final musty, earthy, grainy note providing a foil that keeps the beer from becoming cloying.
Overall, this is a well-executed Berliner Weisse with massive tropical fruit notes. Pair this beer with honey-glazed roasted chicken and buttery garlic boiled new potatoes.
