Rick Franckhauser is a National-ranked BJCP judge and seasoned beer expert with a passion for beer styles that spans nearly five decades. His journey into the world of beer began in 1975 through an early love of the culinary arts, sparked further by Michael Jackson’s The World Guide to Beer. As imported and craft beers became more accessible, Rick’s fascination with the variety and complexity of beer styles only deepened.
In 1991, driven by curiosity and the limited availability of certain styles, Rick began homebrewing. He joined the Cincinnati Malt Infusers in 1996, where he served as Program Director and continues to help lead the club’s annual BJCP exam prep course—mentoring the next generation of beer judges.
Certified as a BJCP judge in 2004, Rick has judged numerous competitions and remains a passionate advocate for beer education. His expertise lies in the appreciation of diverse beer styles, and he’s known for his refined palate and deep understanding of aroma and flavor profiles. More than anything, Rick simply loves beer—and his enthusiasm for the craft continues to inspire those around him.
