Description

Our Grapefruit Sculpin is the latest take on our signature IPA. Some may say there are few ways to improve Sculpin’s unique flavor, but the tart freshness of grapefruit perfectly complements our IPA’s citrusy hop character. Grapefruit’s a winter fruit, but this easy-drinking ale tastes like summer.

This IPA pours a brilliant, beautiful gold color with a medium-sized head of small, cream-colored bubbles that fades fairly quickly. The initial aroma is of very smooth grapefruit pulp, with notes of bread crust, toast, grass and background tangerine. The flavor brings out both grapefruit pulp (like biting into a ruby-red grapefruit segment with the membrane still attached) and pithy grapefruit zest from the skin, which plays very nicely with the grapefruit and tangerine hop characters along with some spicy black pepper notes in the background. A very clean fermentation and low yeast notes make for a fairly bitter and dry finish. The body is medium-low with a medium level of carbonation, and the finish features a nice, clean alcohol warmth at the back of the throat. Crisp and smooth, this was an extremely enjoyable beer. This beer would pair well with bacon, sausage or Eggs Benedict – it's a great breakfast beer!

Sculpin is great, and adding grapefruit makes for an interesting beer. The tart fruit accentuates the hops, but the acidity detracts from the mouthfeel. It seems to be hard to temper that aspect without a big malt addition. Nevertheless, an eminently quaffable brew, albeit in slightly less quantity than Sculpin Au Naturale.

A delightful marriage of fruit and hop characteristics. Try blending two of these with some Habanero Sculpin for some sweet heat!
