Description

We stacked this Juicy Hazy Double IPA with a clever combo of American and Southern Hemisphere hops, achieving a maximum punch of tropical stone fruits, citrus, white wine, and pineapple. We've jazzed up the body with the addition of wheat and oats plus enough lactose to complement and not compete with the complex hop arrangement.

Gnarpocalyse by Gnarly Barley Brewing Co. is being evaluated as a Specialty IPA: New England IPA (Category 21B) from the 2015 BJCP Provisional Style guidelines.

This beer poured a very cloudy straw color and had a short-lasting foamy white head.

Light grassy aromas led to a moderate amount of honeydew, unripened pineapple and peach nectar with lots of sweetness. Esters abound, making for very pleasant experience. The nose ended with hardly any malt or off aromas.

The flavor profile begins with tropical fruit juice and a moderately high alcohol flavor. There's very little malt character as is appropriate for the style. Some citrus notes developed in the flavor with sweet tangerine and piney bitterness. The balance is decidedly toward the hop flavor, and the finish is semi-dry with a boozy aftertaste.

This beer is medium-light-bodied with medium high carbonation that makes the fruity quality sizzle on the tongue. There is no escaping the alcoholic warmth as it seems pretty high and not as desirable. The oats described in the ingredients may contribute to a softer mouthfeel, but not enough sadly.

With the style being as popular as it is these days New England IPAs tend to be bold, fruity and light-bodied. Unfortunately, the alcohol in this one seems overwhelming at times, and this beer would benefit from a less boozy flavor and mouthfeel.
