Description

Our Situational Ethics series comes to an end this year with three dessert-inspired imperial stouts. This bottle is an ode to vanilla affogato. With a combination of toasted coconut, Batdorf & Bronson coffee, espresso beans, and Ugandan vanilla beans, we’re able to recreate the beautiful contrast of bold espresso and sweet vanilla ice cream. Best enjoyed on its own or poured over coconut ice cream.

The following review of Situational Ethics - Vanilla Barrel-Aged Affogato Imperial Stout by Monday Night Brewing was conducted under the provisions of the style guidelines as provided by the Beer Judge Certification Program under sub heading 33B Specialty Wood-Aged Beer after being dispensed from a 500-mL bottle into a 12-ounce snifter.

An intense high roast coffee aroma is immediately perceived with supporting vanilla bean notes and a bit of coconut to augment the bouquet.

Deep brown in color, opaque with smallish head retention, which did not persist.

In order for specialty beers to work it is necessary that the base beer (In this case imperial stout) be accurately brewed and not be overwhelmed by other constituents. Ingredients manifested here blended harmoniously to create a potpourri of flavors, which included a rich malty espresso-like roast accompanied by coconut, vanilla, raisins and dark chocolate. Alcoholic warmth and a big full body led to a pleasant bittersweet finish.

This is a hearty ale that will warm the innards on a cold winter night in front of the fireplace. Due to its higher alcoholic strength this is a beer that can be enjoyed even by the most persnickety wine drinker.
