Lone Buffalo

Lone Buffalo by Wild Leap Brew Co. was reviewed as per the 2015 revised style guidelines established by the Beer Judge Certification Program under sub-category 33B Specialty Wood Aged Beer.

Upon first pour, an astonishing complexity of aromas were conveyed. There was a lot going on here. Sherry notes blend with dark roasted grains and are accompanied by vanilla and whiskey fragrances that delight the nose.

The color was jet black with a coffee-colored head that fell off (which is not unusual in higher-gravity beers) after the initial pour.

An intensely rich flavor profile manifested itself. A pleasant balance of roastiness marries nicely with sherry-like oxidation, vanilla, dark fruit, toffee and residual unfermented sugars. Appears to be well aged as any hop element has mellowed into the background.

The body is full and smooth over the tongue with a firm warming presence of alcohol making itself apparent throughout the sip.

In order to deliver a quality barrel-aged imperial stout it is paramount to have a superior base beer. This was undeniably the case here. The character of this imperial stout was further enhanced by barrel-aging and conscientious brewing techniques that did not disappoint. Certainly, this is a world-class brew.
