Description

Our latest Son of Saint beer is a take on Sonny's Margarita. We loaded this fruited sour with sweet Valencia Orange and Lime Juice, smoothed it out with a touch of agave syrup and then finished it on sea salt and gave it a kick with some Chipotle Pepper!

Building Lives-Son of A Saint-Sonny's Spicy Margarita by Urban South Brewery was described simply as a “spicy margarita sour,” the sample (style 29B–Fruit & Spice Beer) in my snifter poured an opaque orange, with a head that dissipated rather quickly. Aromatic notes of citrus and smoked paprika were quite evident, piquing my interest to taste. The lime and grapefruit components were immediately recognizable, backed up with a pretty tame amount of bitterness.

As the flavor hit the back of my throat, the heat from the peppers kicked in, as did the general tartness in the finish. Since heat combined with tartness are not often found together, the first few sips were quite shocking to understand. However, as the session progressed, the two competing flavors became much more palatable and I discovered a minor smokiness to the beverage that boosted its interest.

This was a fun beer to taste, very well thought-out with a fresh, zesty character that I appreciated. While not something I could quaff a tremendous amount of, the beer did have some interesting aspects to be appreciated.
