Väsen Hefeweizen by Väsen Brewing Co. was judged as a Weissbier (10A). Right off, the fragrances of clove and banana hit the nose with a very nice balance that showcases the desired qualities of the style very nicely. Beneath those more obvious aromas, a bready wheat quality lends a backbone that is also very nice. The color is a very light straw, and the beer is quite clear in the pour that I received. A white head shows some fluffiness and is very persistent. Like the aroma, the flavors of clove and banana are very noticeable along with a slightly grainy flavor. There is also a distracting sharp quality to the flavor that is almost metallic and may be a result of minerals in the water, hop bitterness or a wheat grain off-flavor. Hop flavors are present but low and masked quite well by the yeast phenol and esters. The mouthfeel is medium with a somewhat creamy sensation. The finish has some sharpness that is derived from the same issue noted before in the flavor. Generally, those detracting qualities are fairly minor and this beer provides a very nice example of a fresh weissbier (or German hefewiezen) that is worth finding for anyone, particularly if you are a fan of the style or are looking for a break from the hop madness that typically dominates the beer selection.
