Velvet Uppercut by Flying Lion Brewing is a Belgian Golden Strong and is being evaluated as a Belgian Golden Strong Ale (category 25C from the 2021 BJCP Beer Style Guidelines). Belgian Golden Strong Ales are noted for their deceptive strength, light color and simple malt profile as well as prominent yeast-derived citrusy esters and peppery phenolics with an occasional complement from hops. Velvet Uppercut measures in at 9.0% ABV.

Velvet Uppercut pours dark golden in color, is clear and sports a moderate white head. The aroma is moderate biscuity malt over lighter peppery phenolics and light floral esters. The flavor is moderate biscuity malt complemented by lighter spicy hops and peppery phenolics. The beer finishes with moderate bready and biscuity malt with light peppery phenolics.

Velvet Uppercut is appropriately deceptively strong. The malt flavors are a little peculiar for the style but they are appropriate, flavorful and welcomed. The peppery phenolics add some depth to the beer. Definitely seek this one out and enjoy!
