Tynt Meadow by Mount Saint Bernard Abbey was reviewed as #26B (Belgian Dubbel) according to the 2021 BJCP Guidelines.
The pour of this beer revealed a dark brown hue that was cloudy in appearance. It had light carbonation, and the head dissipated quickly along the sides of the glass. The aroma of this beer was very noticeable. Nice malt sweetness along with dried fruit elements of raisins and plum come to mind; overall, it was a wonderful bouquet.
The initial taste of this beer revealed much complexity. I noted a heavy malt presence and moderate bittering. I discovered those selfsame dried fruit notes found in the arom (raisins and plums) along with subtle toasted malt that lent itself to a biscuity flavor as well as a light spiciness that rounded out the taste beautifully. At 7.4% ABV, a nice alcohol bite is noticeable in the flavor as well.
The body and mouthfeel of this beer was medium to heavy and carbonation was light. The overall impression of this beer was that its complexity shone through during the entire sampling. Its malt elements, hop bittering and other flavors (dried fruit), spicy notes and that subtle biscuit taste made it more sophisticated than almost any other dubbel this judge has had the privilege to review. The finish and aftertaste was smooth and rich with lingering notes of dried fruit and spicy notes in the palate. This is a World Class brew that’s worth seeking out at the earliest opportunity.
