Westmalle Extra by Brouwerij Westmalle was judged as a #26A (Trappist Single) according to the 2021 BJCP Guidelines.
The pour of this beer revealed a light straw hue that had slight chill haze in appearance, a very good carbonation level along with good head retention after the initial pour. The aroma of this beer had a nice malt sweetness along with light spiciness in the fragrance. The initial taste of this beer revealed a nice balance of malt and hops. Both of these components were subtle in their flavors, revealing a very light malt backbone with light biscuity notes. The hops were just as subtle too, as they intermingled in the background of this beer. The beer also had a light spiciness and yeasty flavors that blended well.
The mouthfeel and body had a light mouthfeel, and the carbonation was moderate, which played well on the palate.
Overall, this restrained beer revealed nice, light, airy and well-balanced flavors. Very smooth in the palate with some spiciness in the finish. This 4.8% ABV is easy-drinking and flavorful.
