Place to Imagine Vol. 1 by Social Fox Brewing is being evaluated as a Wild Specialty Beer (Category 28C) from the 2015 BJCP Style guidelines.
The guidance is described as a sour and/or funky version of a fruit, herb or spice beer or a wild beer aged in wood.
The aroma is decidedly prickly pear, as in (cantaloupe) melon and hints of watermelon with fruity sweet notes. There’s a green vegetal component, while being absent of hops or malt.
The color of this beer is a hazy version of watermelon juice, and lots of bubbles can be seen rising to the top, which is crowned by a soft pink foamy head.
Flavors are that of the fruit in the aroma, (cantaloupe) melon with a hint of watermelon. The fruity character takes center stage, while making it distinct. The dryness contributes to a light quality, while the bitterness is that of a green apple character. There are slight funky flavors intermingled with a light degree of tartness.
This beer is light-bodied with a high degree of carbonation. Slightly astringent from the fruit and fermentation technique. This one hides its 7.5% alcohol content well.
Overall, this doesn’t drink like your traditional beer. The prickly pear fruit component gives it a different drinking experience. The fruity and vegetal flavors are interesting, making it very distinct. A beer for folks who are seeking non-traditional qualities in a carbonated fruity beverage.
