Santa’s Berries by Low Road Brewing was judged as a Wild Specialty Beer under the BJCP category of 28C. The aroma of this beer had nice hints of cranberry and subtle strawberry along with citric acidity. The pour revealed a very nice “sunset” hue of slight orange and red that was very hazy and cloudy. The carbonation produced a nice white foamy, rocky head that dissipated quickly.

The flavor hits you on impact, because this is a sour. It was very sour and very tart from the get-go. If one is not familiar with this beer style then this will come as somewhat of a shock. The base beer and overall flavor was funky and earthy (a good sign) with subtle hints of cranberries and strawberries that somehow revealed themselves among the lactic tartness and sourness. The body and mouthfeel of this beer was light/medium that had a nice moderate carbonation. The overall finish of this beer was mouth-puckering. I wouldn’t call this smooth, because it wasn’t. A sour or tart beer is not supposed to be smooth, and that is one of many of the characteristics of this style.
