Description

A king of Doppelbocks is what we have here. Asam Bock is refined by I’m sure many many years of brewing and is a must for aficionados of the style or serious beer people. This is outstanding. An extremely delicious doppelbock with huge dark malt presence and just enough earthiness to keep it from being sweet. It hits all the right notes for the style including a killer mouthfeel that is silky smooth and soft, while staying very clean. Friends and connoisseurs particularly will appreciate it for its strong, sweet, very aromatic and persistent taste

Weltenburger Asam Bock by Weltenburger Kloster is a Dopplebock and is being evaluated as a Dopplebock (category 9A in the 2021 BJCP Beer Style Guidelines). Doppelbocks are strong, dark German lagers noted for their strong bready, melanoidin-rich malt character.

Asam Bock pours deep amber in color, is clear and has a medium off-white head. The aroma is rich with moderate bready and caramel malt with notes of plum-like dark fruits. The flavor is prominently rich malt with flavors of bread, toast and caramel with a light sweetness. The beer finishes with a moderate bitterness and a light sweetness with prominent bready and caramel malt. A light, sharp burnt molasses note late in the finish only slightly detracts.

Asam Bock is a solid Dopplebock that vividly displays the highlights of the style: strength, richness and prominent melanoidins with bready and caramel characteristics. This beer is a bit more caramelly than other Dopplebocks but the caramel malt adds to the richness and complexity. A light, sharp burnt molasses note late in the finish only slightly detracts (but tempers the sweetness a little too). Definitely seek this one out.
