Tröegs Brewmaster John Trogner Discusses Double Perpetual IPA
93 Rating - Exceptional
We spoke with Tröegs Brewing Co. Brewmaster John Trogner about Rum Barrel-Aged Coconut Porter.
Who came up with this beer’s recipe?
Double Perpetual IPA came to fruition through our small-batch Scratch Series. Originally released last year for our Scratch #500 milestone, it was an immediate hit with fans and sold out within the first day of its release.
Where does this beer’s name come from?
Double Perpetual IPA takes its name from Perpetual IPA, our best-selling year-round beer. With Double Perpetual, we dove deeper into our love of big, bold West Coast-style beers. The result is an amped-up, 9.5% ABV version of Perpetual IPA.
Can you describe this beer in 10 words or less?
Big. Bold. Hoppy. Citrus. Pine. Tropical Fruit. Perpetual.
Do you know a story – or have a personal story – that revolves around this beer?
“One of the ways we share our creative process is through our Scratch Series. Over the years, it’s served as a testing ground for potential new beers, and one of the first ones to graduate out of the Scratch Series to year-round was Perpetual IPA. It’s hard to imagine, but there was a time when we didn’t brew an IPA. Then, Citra hops came along, so we said, ‘Why not?’. After about half a dozen Scratch batches, we finally landed on the recipe that would become Perpetual IPA, one of our most recognizable beers.
