What inspired this beer in the first place?
We wanted to create a beer made from all-American ingredients that would exemplify craft brewing but appeal to the wider beer-drinking demographic.
How would you describe this beer to someone who has never had it before?
Love City Lager is an incredibly easy-drinking, clean, crisp lager with light citrus notes from the American hops.
What was the hardest part of getting it right?
The toughest part was dialing in the bitterness, flavor, and aroma hop amounts. It’s very easy for a beer like this to become too bitter, but if it’s not bitter enough, it can be cloyingly sweet. We’re happy with the current recipe, as we think it’s very well balanced.
Was there a moment when you realized this beer had real staying power?
We realized early on that this beer would be a staple for us. Seeing the sales in the taproom and getting feedback from our staff and customers made that clear. It’s been our number-one or number-two seller for the eight years that we’ve been around.
Is there a memorable story about this beer that still makes you smile, cringe, or shake your head?
We like to have fun, so we do something called the “shotgun start” during happy hour. Folks that arrive right when we open get a free can of Love City Lager, and we offer them the chance to shotgun it if they want!
When is the best time and place for this beer?
The beauty of Love City Lager is that there’s no wrong time to drink it!
