Allagash Brewing Releases Sustainability Report Highlighting Recycling, Local Sourcing, and B Corp Impact

As Allagash Brewing Company scales up its production, it continues to demonstrate that industry efficiency and environmental responsibility can co-exist successfully through disciplined, data-driven improvements. Their latest reporting breaks down sweeping goals to highlight the granular changes — such as localized grain sourcing and pioneering carbon capture — that have helped to push their B Corp impact score ever higher. In sharing these internal milestones, the Portland-based craft leader provides a clear path for other companies seeking to translate sustainability aspirations into tangible outcomes.

A press release from Allagash Brewing Company revealed this year’s report details how sustainability informs every aspect of the brewery’s operations, from sourcing ingredients and brewing beer to packaging, shipping, and supporting employees.

The report’s new detail-oriented focus aims to provide a clearer picture of how the mindset of constant improvement actually comes to life, in order to inform and inspire other like-minded businesses.

“We wanted this report to show the care and intentionality our team brings to work every day,” said Rob Tod, Founder of Allagash Brewing Company. “By going deeper into specific examples, we hope that this more effectively shares insight into how we work to continuously improve our operation. It’s a way to share our experience and wins with other businesses working toward the same community and sustainability-oriented goals.”

Key Highlights from the Report

Brewing More Efficiently
Though brewing is a complex, precise, resource-intensive process, Allagash designed its operations to get the most out of every raw ingredient, using the least possible energy. Their improvements include:

  • Managing fermentation to reduce CO2 usage and emissions. The process captures naturally produced CO₂, reducing emissions by more than 18,000 pounds annually
  • de-aerated water system allows equipment cleaning with water instead of finished beer, saving ingredients, energy, and labor
  • Partnerships with local farmers repurpose brewing byproducts, diverting 5.8 million pounds of spent grain and 1.5 million pounds of yeast each year as animal feed and fertilizer

Waste Reduction & Packaging
Continuous efficiency upgrades are helping Allagash minimize waste and resource use:

  • 98% of brewery waste diverted from landfill
  • Water usage maintained at 3.4 gallons per gallon of beer, about half the industry average
  • New can crusher enables efficient recycling of roughly 150,000 aluminum cans annually
  • Transition to lightly used “Grade A” pallets saves approximately 10,000 pallets per year

Local Ingredients & Smarter Logistics
Allagash continues reducing environmental impact by strengthening local supply chains and improving transportation efficiency:

  • Brewed with more than 2 million pounds of Maine-grown grain in 2025, doubling usage since 2021.
  • Relocated warehouse operations closer to the brewery, eliminating 20,000 shipping miles annually — nearly one trip around the earth
  • Redesigned cardboard tray shipments to eliminate plastic stretch wrap and cut the amount of delivery trucks needed in half

Community Collaboration & Distribution
Allagash continues working with partners to make strides in stewardship:

  • The Allagash Recycling Co-Op, now in its sixth year, collaborates with local grocers and craft breweries to recycle difficult materials, collectively diverting more than 180 tons of waste from landfill since launch.

Investing in People and Continuous Improvement

  • The report also highlights Allagash’s commitment to employee wellbeing and workplace culture. Annual third-party engagement surveys help guide internal priorities, contributing to the brewery being named one of Maine’s Best Places to Work twelve times since 2013. Longstanding traditions, innovation programs, and tenure-based benefits, including paid sabbaticals and annual staff trips to Belgium, support employee growth and retention.

“Our sustainability work is never finished,” added Tod. “But we’re proud to share these efforts to do better for our employees, our community, our customers, and the environment.”
