Ecliptic Brewing Owner & Brewmaster John Harris Talks Capella Porter

John Harris, brewmaster of Ecliptic Brewing.

We spoke with Ecliptic Brewing owner and brewmaster John Harris about Capella Porter.

BC: Who came up with this beer’s recipe?
I did.

BC: What’s your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, etc.)?
My favorite thing about Capella Porter is that it has a smooth balance of roast and caramel.

BC: Where does this beer’s name come from?
It is named after Capella, a star in the constellation Auriga, the charioteer.

BC: Is this your “desert island beer?”
No. My desert island beer would definitely be an IPA.

BC: Can you describe this beer in 10 words or less?
A bright, balanced porter with flavors of chocolate and caramel.

BC: Do you know a story – or have a personal story – that revolves around this beer?
I really enjoy porters and I knew for sure that once I opened Ecliptic I wanted there to always be one on the menu. Also, I knew I wanted Capella Porter to be different than the Black Butte Porter I created when I brewed for Deschutes Brewery. I like that both Capella and Black Butte are great examples of porters with different ingredients and flavors.

One of the my most memorable moments happened at the 2016 World Beer Cup.  When the category winners for brown porter were called and I heard the word 'Capella' after gold medal, well, that was a great feeling!

BC: What's a good food pairing for this beer?
Capella Porter will go great with roast chicken and almost any dessert.
