David Sapsis is a Grand Master II-ranked BJCP beer judge with over four decades of brewing and judging experience. He began brewing in 1983 and joined the Beer Judge Certification Program just two years later, in 1985. Throughout his tenure with the BJCP, Dave has held multiple leadership roles, including Exam Assistant Director, Exam Director, and Western Representative on the BJCP Board of Directors.
While earning his Forestry degree at the University of California, Dave met his future wife—then working in a world-class yeast lab led by a Nobel Prize-winning professor. Together, they developed a diverse yeast bank that greatly expanded his brewing capabilities and curiosity.
Dave continues to brew and judge regularly, with a particular passion for yeast-driven styles. Outside of beer, he enjoys cooking, charcuterie, and motorcycle racing. Professionally, he serves the State of California as a wildland fire scientist. With decades of hands-on brewing expertise and judging leadership, David Sapsis is a true authority in the world of beer evaluation and craft brewing.
