Scott Birdwell is a Grand Master I-ranked BJCP judge. Scott’s passion for quality beer began on a 1977 European trip, discovering iconic brews in Great Britain, Germany, and Czechoslovakia. Inspired by seeing homebrewing supplies abroad, he made his first batch of beer upon returning to Houston, kickstarting a lifelong brewing journey.
Scott bought DeFalco’s homebrew supply shop in 1980, where he’s been a fixture ever since, nurturing the local brewing community. In 1981, he helped found the Foam Rangers homebrew club and organized the first Dixie Cup Homebrew Competition in 1984.
As one of the earliest BJCP participants, Scott became the program’s first Master Judge in 1988, recognized for both skill and dedication. He played a key role in administering BJCP exams across Texas and served in leadership roles within the Home Wine & Beer Trade Association, including president.
Scott’s contributions to homebrewing and craft beer have earned him prestigious awards, including the Instone Trophy and AHA Recognition Award. A testament to his legacy, a 240-barrel bright beer tank at St. Arnold’s Brewing Co. proudly bears his name.
