Description

Jack Skellington would be proud of this smooth and tasteful pumpkin beer. Brewed like a Scottish style ale with pumpkin puree, select spices, and brown sugar added in.

Bone Daddy by Dough Daddy Brewery is being evaluated as style 30B, Autumn Seasonal Beer, per the 2021 BJCP Style Guidelines. After reviewing, I learned it was a Scottish-style ale with pumpkin puree, spices, and brown sugar.

In the glass, it is a tarnished copper color, slightly hazy, with a fizzy head that falls away. Looks the part.

On the nose, there is a pleasant underlying berry note, almost like cherry pie. Light notes of melon follow, along with cinnamon and nutmeg. It is a very pleasant aroma, if a bit on the lighter side for a pumpkin beer. Nothing overpowering here, which is welcome.

On tasting, it has a cinnamon-driven sweetness that somewhat dominates, backed up by a bready malt component. It is lightly fruity and a little melony as well. Slightly sweet, but not oppressively so. I dig the balance overall, but would like a bit more depth, as this comes across more cinnamon than anything else.

It finishes dry and feels soft on the palate, with no notable astringency and appropriate carbonation.

Pretty solid beer overall, but it could use a touch more spice complexity.
