Nut Brown Ale by Mt. Carmel Brewing Co. is being evaluated as an American Brown Ale (Category 19C) from the 2021 BJCP Style guidelines.

Moderate aromas of sweet malt lead the profile, complemented by a low, earthy, and subtly citrusy hop character. Prominent fruity esters derived from the ale yeast present clear notes of ripe red apple and figs, adding complexity and depth.

The beer poured a striking light brown with brilliant reddish overtones. It possessed exceptional, crystal-clear clarity, topped by a persistent, foamy, tan-colored head that lingered gracefully.

The flavor is predominantly malty and smooth, featuring rich hints of chocolate and a light presence of roasted malt. Hops contribute a very low presence in the flavor profile. The subdued bitterness allows for a pronounced, malt-forward finish that is long-lasting and beckons another sip.

This beer is medium-bodied with moderate, spritzy carbonation, providing a smooth drinking experience. No warming alcohol notes or astringency were detected, ensuring a clean and satisfying palate.

This American brown ale is an exceptional example of the style, delivering classic chocolate and caramel flavors. The intentionally lower hop character allows the malt complexity to shine, highlighting the style’s inherent balance. It is a satisfying interpretation of the style.
