Kidd Squid and Ma’s House Unite for a New IPA Celebrating Indigenous Art

Kidd Squid Brew Co. is introducing Ma’s House, a 6.4% ABV India Pale Ale created in collaboration with Ma’s House & BIPOC Art Studio. The release features artwork by Anishinaabe artist Cass Gardiner – whose work brings Indigenous storytelling and traditional floral beadwork into a pixelated visual style. The collaboration celebrates the connection between craft brewing, Indigenous art, and the creative communities of the East End.

In a press release, Kidd Squid announced that the Ma’s House IPA will be available on Saturday, September 19, 2026, coinciding with the Sag Harbor Chamber of Commerce’s annual HarborFest weekend at Kidd Squid and throughout the Village.

The beer is part of an ongoing artist collaboration series between Kidd Squid and Ma’s House & BIPOC Art Studio, the Indigenous-led communal art space on the Shinnecock Indian Nation territory in Southampton.

The can artwork was created by Cass Gardiner, an Anishinaabe Omàmiwinini filmmaker, curator, and writer from Kebaowek First Nation in present-day Quebec. Working across mediums, her practice explores Indigenous identity, storytelling, culture, and the construction of history. In augmented reality and immersive media, Cass co-created LAND INVADERS (2026) with Bird x Bird, the first video game officially selected for the Berlinale’s Forum Expanded. Her Webby-winning Skoden Warriors (2025), commissioned by Amplifier, was part of Encoded, an unsanctioned takeover of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s American wing in New York City on Columbus Day.

Most recently, Cass is the first-ever guest editor of Petits Propos Culinaires, the premiere international journal published by Equinox dedicated to food, cookery, and food history. Her special issue, focusing on the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery expedition through the voices of Native writers, will be published in September 2026. She is a 2025–2026 Forge Project Writing Fellow, and her latest piece, “Botany of Empire: A Conversation on the Study of Plant Life,” published in Forge Project’s online journal Forging, examines how botanical knowledge was reshaped by the founders of botany in service of colonial ambitions.

About the Artwork

The label draws on traditional Anishinaabe woodland floral beadwork — florals, oak leaves, strawberries, butterflies, and hop cones — reinterpreted through the visual language of pixelated 1990s computer games, a signature of Gardiner’s work with Bird x Bird. The type on the can is drawn to look hand-sewn rather than perfect, reflecting an Anishinaabe teaching that nothing in nature is perfect and that human art should carry that same truth.

“It is a pleasure to bring my work to Weg-wag-onuch (Sag Harbor), the traditional lands of the Shinnecock and Montaukett peoples. As a former artist-in-residence at Ma’s House I loved my time getting to know the communities and land here and to return for this collaboration with Kidd Squid is a full circle moment. Anishinaabe travel and trade across rivers and lakes, and I love that through this collaboration our floral designs will now travel the east end and reach the Atlantic ocean,” said Cass Gardiner.

Ma’s House & BIPOC Art Studio Inc. is led by Shinnecock artist Jeremy Dennis, a contemporary fine art photographer whose work centers Indigenous identity, culture, and assimilation. Founded in June 2020 on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation in Southampton, N.Y., the 501(c)(3) nonprofit runs a residency for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color artists, a shared studio, a communal library, and public arts and history programming for the tribal community and the wider East End.

Launched in May 2026, the Kidd Squid × Ma’s House collaboration series pairs small-batch releases from the brewery with original label artwork by BIPOC artists selected by Ma’s House. A portion of proceeds from every release supports Ma’s House & BIPOC Art Studio.
