Grassy Place Tropics by Beaver State Brewing is being evaluated as a Fruit Beer (Category 29A) from the 2021 BJCP Beer Style Guidelines.

It pours a bright golden hue with the appropriate haze expected for the style, giving it a soft, glowing appearance. A white head forms initially and settles into a thin, delicate layer of fine bubbles that lingers on the surface. Overall, the presentation is appealing and stylistically appropriate for a fruit-forward IPA.

The aroma opens with prominent grapefruit zest, which gradually softens to reveal notes of ripe mango. As the beer warms and opens further, additional tropical nuances begin to emerge, adding depth and complexity. Beneath the fruit, there is a subtle bready, slightly grainy malt backbone that provides gentle support without distracting from the fruit expression. Any hop-derived aromatics are seamlessly integrated with the fruit additions, making them difficult to distinguish individually. No noticeable alcohol character is present in the aroma.

On the palate, the beer delivers a lively medley of fruit flavors, led by mango and fresh pineapple, with supporting notes of light grapefruit zest and a touch of orange citrus. Mid-palate, a soft, slightly sweet malt character reminiscent of cookie dough comes through, adding roundness and balance. A medium level of hop bitterness builds gradually, helping to counter the fruit sweetness and carrying through to a fairly dry, refreshing finish. The overall balance leans toward the tropical fruit profile, while the malt provides structure. As with the aroma, hop flavors are highly integrated with the fruit, creating a unified profile rather than sharply distinct layers.

The mouthfeel is medium-bodied with a light creaminess that enhances drinkability without becoming heavy. Moderate carbonation keeps the beer lively, while a faint, smooth alcohol warmth adds subtle depth without distraction.

Overall, Grassy Place Tropics is a well-executed Fruit Beer built on a solid IPA foundation. The fruit additions are well integrated, enhancing the tropical character without overwhelming the base beer. The result is a balanced and approachable beer that offers a refreshing yet nuanced drinking experience.
