Tropical Mist by Pure Project Brewing is being evaluated as a Fruit Beer (Category 29A) from the 2021 BJCP Style Guidelines.
Tropical Mist displays a deep yellow color with a moderate haze, which is not unusual for a fruit beer, and a thick, white foam stand that seems to hang around forever. Tropical Mist debuts with a prominent aroma of fresh orange zest and fruit with a very light grainy, bready malt character emerging as the hops begin to fade a little. No hop aroma or fermentation esters were noted behind the fresh citrus.
The bright orange fruit also takes center stage in the flavor, and drinking this is like eating a section of fresh, ripe orange. As the citrus fades down, a very light bready malt character develops mid-palate along with a very light but noticeable hop bitterness that hits hard and lingers into the medium-dry finish. As with the aroma, this beer displays no fermentation esters and there is no hop flavor found behind the citrus. The beer’s medium body holds the fruit well, and the moderate carbonation adds to its refreshing nature.
This is an incredibly refreshing and well brewed fruit beer that is the perfect accompaniment to a hot day. The overall orange character is a touch bold and could be eased slightly to allow the base beer to make a slightly better appearance, but this is just a very minor issue. It is a crushable beer that is thirst-quenching and enjoyable.
