Side Bae Double IPA: HBC 472 Cryo Hops by Wild Leap Brew Co. was judged as style 21, American IPA, per the 2021 BJCP style guidelines.
This beer features modern aromas of intense lime, coconut and white grape, which drown out any malt presentation in the beer. At 7.6% ABV, the smooth alcohol is noticeable. It poured a light straw color and its off-white head stayed around for over ten minutes. The interesting hop presentation continued in the flavor with additional moderate tropical fruit and red apples. The light grainy malt attempts to provide support but is also balanced by the low-to-moderate hop bitterness. After a middling finish, coconut and lime linger into the aftertaste. These zippy flavors provide a refreshing twist on the style. Although it’s a bigger beer, the alcohol flavor has a bit of a snappy bite to it, which ultimately limits the beer. Overall though, the hop presentation is unique and could be a delicious addition to an evening in the Caribbean.
