SnowBlower Coconut Cream Ale by BrewHaHa Brewing Co. is being evaluated as a Fruit and Spice Beer (Category 29B) from the 2021 BJCP Style guidelines.
Pleasant aromas of coconut milk are present, though hops or malted grains were absent. No off-aromas nor diacetyl were detected.
The beer showed a deep shade of gold with a slight haze, and a beautiful white foamy head crowned the glass. Light in viscosity due to the many rising bubbles seen in the glass.
A pleasantly sweet coconut flavor comes through. The cream ale character of the base beer is not present. The coconut flavor is more pronounced than the base beer. This brew finishes with a soft dry finish and low bitterness. I appreciate that the coconut flavor tastes fresh, as if the coconut was just sliced in twain with a machete.
Medium light-bodied, the carbonation is medium-high, which gives it a suggestion of lime. As expected with a light beer like this, there are no warming alcohols, or astringency.
This is an interesting flavor approach, and one that blurs the definition of what a beer can be. With closed eyes, my palate tells me that I’m having a spiked carbonated coconut water beverage. The vanilla notes and lactose give this beer a cocktail-like dimension, paired with the added coconut flavor. A refreshing beer for the summertime; one that brings the beach life to your lips.
