Homebrewers Prove Their Mettle with Gold at 2026 U.S. Open Beer Championship

Two homebrewers have demonstrated that exceptional beer can come from small-scale setups as easily as from commercial breweries, earning top honors in one of the nation’s most respected brewing competitions. Their victories in two very different beer styles showcase the skill and precision and creativity that continue to elevate homebrewing in the United States. Those achievements were recognized at the 2026 U.S. Open Beer Championship – where standout entries from homebrewers competed alongside beers from professional breweries.
A press release from the organizers of the U.S. Open Beer Championships revealed that the homebrewers who earned gold are Wayne Doucette of Big Lake, Minnesota and Joe Skiles of Carol Stream, Illinois.
They once again proved that some of the best beer in the country is being brewed in home kitchens and garages, not just commercial breweries.
Wayne Doucette of Big Lake, Minnesota, took gold in the American Lager category for his beer “Lynn’s Lager.” Doucette is a member of the River City Brewers homebrew club. American Lager is one of the most technically demanding styles to brew well — its clean, crisp profile leaves nowhere for a brewer to hide a flaw — which makes a gold medal finish in this category a genuine mark of brewing precision.
Joe Skiles of Carol Stream, Illinois, earned gold in the English Barley Wine category with his entry “Calculating Infinity.” Skiles brews with the Urban Knaves of Grain homebrew club. English Barley Wine sits at the opposite end of the brewing spectrum from American Lager — big, rich, high-gravity beers that reward patience, balance, and careful aging — and Skiles’ gold medal reflects mastery of that craft.
“These results are exactly why we love this competition,” said Spencer Mapes, director of the U.S. Open Beer Championship. “Homebrewers like Wayne and Joe are going toe-to-toe with professional breweries and coming out on top. It’s a reminder that great beer doesn’t care where it’s made — it just has to be great.”
The U.S. Open Beer Championship, co-founded by Dow Scoggins, Jon Downing, and Rick Roberts, draws entries from commercial breweries and homebrewers alike each year, judged side by side by a panel of experienced beer judges. The competition continues to be a proving ground for homebrewers looking to test their recipes against some of the best beers in the country.
