ABV Technology Acquires Bauhaus Brew Labs, Plans to Reopen Iconic Minneapolis Taproom

ABV Technology is expanding beyond beverage alcohol adjustment services with the acquisition of Bauhaus Brew Labs, adding brewing, packaging and taproom operations to its business. The deal will restore the well-known Northeast Minneapolis Bauhaus taproom – while creating a showcase for beverages (spanning full-strength to low and non-alcoholic options). The company aims to strengthen its support for craft beverage brands and capitalize on growing demand for mindful drinking choices by bringing production and alcohol adjustment capabilities together under one roof.

In a press release, ABV Technology announced that following its acquisition of Bauhaus Brew Labs, the iconic Bauhaus taproom in Northeast Minneapolis will be reopening under its original name.

Under ABV’s ownership, the Bauhaus taproom will resume its role as a community hub with distinctive food, diverse events programming, and a new full-spectrum beverage program that brings back original Bauhaus favorites and expands the menu with full strength, no- and low-alcohol craft beer, wine, and cocktails, as well as alcoholic and non-alcoholic specialty drinks. The reopening is expected to happen later this summer.

“Bauhaus and ABV go way back, so we’re excited to start a new chapter for a legendary local institution,” said ABV co-founder and CEO Ben Jordan. “When we launched our business lowering the alcohol content of craft beverages nine years ago, Bauhaus was our first customer, and its Nah brand was our first major success. Since then, we’ve created more than 500 alcohol-adjusted products for more than 200 beverage brands, and we believe this acquisition will play a crucial role in expanding our reach in the Midwest and beyond.”

The company has been providing alcohol adjustment services to customers through its St. Paul facility. The Bauhaus acquisition gives ABV an additional 20,000-barrel-per-year production facility, a state-of-the-art brewhouse with experienced staff, a canning line, a pasteurizer, and other specialized equipment. ABV will be able to brew, adjust, package and pour a beverage from recipe to finished can in one location, allowing it to price its services more competitively and give craft producers better margins against national brands on the grocery shelf.

“We’ve been behind the scenes in the local craft community for a while, trying to help craft brewers and winemakers create new versions of their best-sellers and adapt to changing preferences,” said Jason Trask, co-founder and head of engineering at ABV. “Every tap at Bauhaus will be something we can make for a customer — the flagship at full strength, the same beer at two percent, the non-alcoholic version, and the seltzer we build from the alcohol we removed. With trends like ‘mindful drinking’ on the rise and the shrinking number of ‘third places’ where people can meet up outside home and work, we hope giving people a space to gather where everyone can find a beverage that works for their lifestyle will grow the taproom’s customer base and keep it in business for years to come.”

Founded in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 2017, ABV enables production of non-, low- and full-alcohol beers, wines, ciders, seltzers, THC beverages and cocktails. ABV’s proprietary Equalizer process takes a finished, fully-fermented beverage and separates it into two products: an alcohol-adjusted version that retains the hundreds of flavor and aroma compounds originally created during fermentation, and a clear ethanol-and-water filtrate that can become a base for hard seltzers and other drinks. The approach is distinct from alcohol-free brewing, a process which never creates alcohol in the first place, and therefore never delivers the fermentation byproducts that are key to flavor.

The company has enabled new products for local and regional customers, including Fulton, Indeed, Talea, Aslin, Beak & Skiff,  Scotto, Dangerous Man, BlackStack, Castle Danger, Lift Bridge, Lupulin, Bent Paddle and Elm Creek; nationally, the company works with Molson Coors and others.
