Coconut Rum Barrel Aged Stout by Wild Leap Brew Co. is a coconut rum barrel-aged stout, judged as BJCP Category 33.B Specialty Wood-Aged Beer. Visually rich, this beer is dark brown in color with a reddish edge. It has a low brown head if poured quickly, otherwise it may appear flat. It smells of coconut, caramel and low fermentation esters. This beer is full and chewy with medium-high carbonation. The ethanol in this beer’s flavor is potent, but offset somewhat by its richness and caramel and coconut flavors. Other than low-level bitterness, hop character is not apparent in either aroma or flavor. It finishes sharply. Overall, this beer is certainly an expression of the coconut rum barrels it was aged in. But, the layers and depth of a typical imperial stout are masked.
