Best Maid Sour Pickle Beer

Best Maid Sour Pickle Beer

Best Maid Sour Pickle Beer, Martin House Brewing Co.
Description

A collaboration with Best Maid Pickles in Fort Worth that has a very loyal following all over Texas and beyond.  Best Maid is known for its unique taste, more salty than vinegary and the pickle beer has the same characteristics, with a nice lemon peel acidity from Martin House's souring bacteria.

The base is 2-row and wheat malt, lightly hopped with Columbus to achieve 2.4 IBUs, and the serving temp is best at a nice refrigerated 42°F.

Best Maid Sour Pickle Beer by Martin House Brewing Co. was judged as an Experimental Beer (BJCP Style 34C), presumably made with pickles or pickle juice in the brewing process. When I was a kid, we had a small roller rink in my hometown of Cedar Hill, TX. When you were really fast, you could win the race for your age group and earn a wooden nickel. Now, a wooden nickel isn’t a real thing other than for buying stuff at the snack bar in our little roller rink. And there was really only one thing you could buy outright with your nickel: pickle juice. When you used your nickel to order pickle juice, it was the kid equivalent of walking up to the bar and ordering a snakebite. You felt pretty cool and pretty tough, until you actually tried to drink it. This beer smells like pickle juice, tastes like pickle juice, and you probably have to love pickle juice to find a love for this beer. The aroma has a slight hint of malt, but mostly smells like a pickle. The color is pale yellow, dare I say hinting at green? It is quite clear, and it does not hold a head. The predominant flavor really is pickle, with a slightly salty quality. The sour quality can best be described as, you guessed it, pickle juice. Go try some pickle juice, or this beer, to see what I mean. The mouthfeel is a bit puckering and quite sharp in the finish, and a healthy dose of salt lingers in your mouth. Now I really was one of those kids that liked the pickle juice. I would race my skinny little tail off to win that nickel and head back to the dark, seedy snack room in our little roller rink. I’d get that Dixie cup full of pickle juice, and I’d drink it right down with my eyes squinting up and my adenoids shriveling in the back of my throat. But I have to be honest, it really doesn’t work as a beer. If you want pickle juice Or you love pickle juice, I recommend you get it from a pickle jar, not a beer.
