Light the Sky by Ursula Brewery was judged according to the 2021 BJCP Style Guidelines, Category 23A – Berliner Weisse.
A lightly hazy pale-yellow beer fills my glass and a fizzy, nearly effervescent white head slowly fades to a patchy film on top. Moderate earthy and funky farmhouse aromas greet my first whiff and there is a light wheat malt underneath. A light Brettanomyces character initially shows in the flavor and is quickly overtaken by medium tartness and sourness. A bone-dry finish rounds out the initial flavor experience.
Soft kiwi, gooseberry and lemon hop aromas and flavors add complexity to this straightforward beer style. The beer is well-balanced and not overly sour, and the Brettanomyces early aroma and flavor fades and becomes a fleeting memory as I further sample this beer. There is no hop bitterness. The body is very light, as it should be, and the carbonation is medium-light. The best examples have higher carbonation, but this is a fine example that invites contemplation.
