Judge’s Review: 90 Rating – Clausthaler IPA by Radeberger

Clausthaler IPA by Radeberger is being evaluated per the 2021 BJCP Guidelines as a Category 21C, Hazy IPA, though this is a non-alcoholic example. Clausthauer IPA is an example of a “new wave” of non-alcoholic beers, taking its cue from a more modern popular craft beer style. The character of this beer style does address some of the inherent issues with a non-alcoholic beer, delivering a rather enjoyable rendition that is quite quaffable.  
The aroma does have sweet malt notes up front, with a strange lack of hop aroma considering that this is apparently a dry hopped brew. There is a slight sharp cork-like or musty character in the background, which could be arising from the dry hopping process being used in a non-alcoholic brew, perhaps delivering a vegetal note from the hop itself. The brew is a hazy light gold color with a small, white-bubble head with good retention. 
The flavor has a grassy hop water-like character with a touch of hoppy vegetal notes that presumably arise from the dry hopping. There is a moderate level of bitterness present that helps balance out the residual malt sweetness present in the brew. Minty hop flavors come through in the middle, finish and aftertaste. The hop bitterness helps dry out the finish and prepares the palate for the next sip. The body is thin to medium, and the carbonation is moderate, which also helps cut the sweetness in the finish. 
Overall, this is a rather refreshing rendition of a non-alcoholic Hazy IPA. While the lack of hop aroma detracts for the style, the hop flavors present do complement the presentation, delivering a very nice option for those craft beer drinkers looking for a non-alcoholic option.
