2024 Vinifera Saison by pFriem Family Brewers was judged as a Brett Beer (Style 28A per the BJCP 2021 Guidelines) brewed from a Saison (25B) base style; this beer is labeled as a barrel-aged Saison, but elements of Brettanomyces are evident in my tasting, hence the 28A categorization.
The aroma is earthy and woody with fruity background notes. A mild caramel malt aroma comes through, rounding out hints of acidity as they reach the nose. The color is pale copper, very bright, with a razor-thin ring of white bubbles on the edge of the glass. A steady stream of effervescence rises from the base of the glass. The flavor is both malty and tangy, providing a nice sweet and sour contrast. An umami quality that is reminiscent of a Flanders Red is present, carrying through into the finish with a lingering tangy quality. A fruity quality is also noticeable in low quantities, perhaps best described as underripe raspberry. The mouthfeel is moderate with considerable acidity that carries through the finish.
Overall, I find this to be a quite enjoyable specialty beer that has wild ale qualities without being overly wild, a malty backbone, and interesting aroma and flavor complexities. Besides being a great fireside accompaniment, this beer would be a very good pairing with wild game, particularly some perfectly prepared elk or deer loin or backstrap medallions.
