Peanut Butter Cup Cassowary by Hardywood Park Craft Brewery is a flavored Imperial Milk Stout and is being evaluated as a Spice, Herb or Vegetable Beer (category 30A from the 2015 BJCP Beer Style Guidelines). Spice, Herb or Vegetable Beers should have a harmonious balance between the spices, herbs or vegetables with the base beer style. Sweet Stouts are roasty and chocolaty ales like the rest of the stout family. Sweet Stouts are noted for being sweeter that other stouts, typically by the addition of lactose. Peanut Butter Cup Cassowary was aged on Peruvian cocoa nibs and brewed with peanut butter and measures in at 11% ABV.

Peanut Butter Cup Cassowary pours pitch black in color, is opaque and sports a quickly fading dark brown head. The aroma is of moderately strong peanut butter over lighter roasted malt and rich dark chocolate. The flavor is an evenly balanced moderately strong peanut butter, roasted malt and dark chocolate over a moderate sweetness. The body is full with a smooth and creamy mouthfeel. The beer finishes lightly bitter and moderately sweet with moderately strong peanut butter, rich dark chocolate and roasted malt.

This is a very flavorful, rich and complex imperial stout. The peanut butter, dark malts and cocoa nib flavors contribute a lot of depth and complexity to the beer. The sweetness is noticeable, but it is low enough to stay away from being considered a dessert stout. This is a very well-made peanut butter stout.  Enjoy!
