Wallenpaupack Brewing Co. Head Brewer Logan Ackerley Talks Kroon

We spoke with Wallenpaupack Brewing Co. head brewer Logan Ackerley about Kroon.

Who was responsible for this beer’s recipe?
I wrote the recipe for this beer, but the process is far more important for this beer than the recipe itself. The talented, detail-oriented brewers I work with, Johnathan Conklin and Matt Emanuel, make sure every step from mash-in to packaging is followed exactly.

What sets this beer apart from other examples within the style?
That’s more of a question for the judges, but some of the things that keep me coming back to this beer are its high attenuation and carbonation levels. We make this 9% golden strong ale more drinkable than it has any right to be.

What makes this beer truly World Class?
I suppose the fact that your judge, and the judges at the 2024 World Beer Cup, deemed it so!

What is your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, mouthfeel, etc.)?
The flavor of this beer always stands out to me. You could have a can of Kroon each day for four days in a row and perceive a different dominant flavor each time. Pineapple, pear, cracked pepper, and citrus are some of the flavors you may find, and they are almost entirely derived from the yeast we use.

How popular is this beer among your faithful fans?
We’re not really known for our high-ABV beers (or Belgian styles in general), but it has been popular enough to justify keeping it on tap and/or in cans throughout the year. Wins at the 2024 World Beer Cup and 2024 & 2025 Great American Beer Festivals have certainly helped with its popularity.
